What are the benefits of this study program?
Everyone can join and experience great benefits from being a part of this regular study program. Through regular teachings and meditation, systematic study, and group discussion, we shall gain great confidence in meditation – from basic techniques for overcoming our everyday problems to practices that lead to unsurpassed happiness and permanent inner peace. Warm friendships develop as students inspire each other, sharing insights and experiences of the spiritual path.
What happens at a class?
Prior to class, students study an assigned portion of the text, usually a few pages long, and memorize the essential points. The class begins with chanted prayers and guided meditation. The teacher then reads the assigned selection from the book and gives commentary to the text. There is then an opportunity for paired and group discussion.
What books are studied?
The Program comprises the following five subjects based on Buddha’s Sutra teachings and the corresponding commentaries by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso:
1. The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, based on the commentary Joyful Path of Good Fortune
2. Training the Mind, based on the commentaries Universal Compassion and Eight Steps To Happiness
3. The Heart Sutra, based on the commentary The New Heart of Wisdom
4. Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, based on the commentary Meaningful to Behold
5. Types of Mind, based on the commentary How to Understand the Mind
What book will we be studying in the new class?
We have just finished The New Heart of Wisdom and will begin studying Joyful Path of Good Fortune in September. During his life Buddha gave many teachings revealing the practices that lead to this realization of enlightenment. Later, the great Indian Pandit Atisha arranged all these teachings in the order in which they are to be practiced. This special arrangement became known as the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, or Lamrim. In this book, Geshe Kelsang provides a systematic, step-by-step commentary to these teachings rendering them completely accessible to modern people.
“Although we now have a precious human life with all the freedoms and endowments, we may still find it difficult to practise Dharma purely because we may lack other freedoms such as the time to devote to study and meditation. It is rare to find anyone who has ideal conditions, but the most serious impediment to our spiritual development is our own failure to generate a strong wish to engage in practice.”
― Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, Joyful Path of Good Fortune
